 2011: Top 10 U.S. Psychiatric Drugs Dispensed

 "Suicide is preventable" 1-800-273-8255

Per John M. Grohol, Psy.D., here are the top 10 psychiatric drugs now pharmacy dispensed in the USA. The suicide rate for all bipolar patients varies from 15% and 50%, depending on various studies. Proper drug treatment is essential in preventing suicide in bipolar patients. Lithium Carbonate, the first and most popular mood stabilizer, used to treat both major depression and bipolar disorder, comes in 4th, but it is not a drug shown on this list. Patients must know about all drug side-effects.

Bipolar I and II disorders have high rates of morbidity, comorbidity, disability and mortality. A growing number of drugs, especially Psychiatric drugs, are used to treat bipolar disorder, often off-label and in untested, complex combinations. Antidepressants were the first choice depression treatment drug agents - twice as much as mood stabilizers now are. Lithium use was sustained longer than monotherapy using other mood stabilizers.
